I've been working on creating a virtual playspace for a fellow with dementia. He was having a lot of fun with apps like Kaleidoscope. there was a problem however. he kept hitting the andrioid buttons at the bottom of the screen, which then would take him out of the app.At this point he would be lost until I or someone else, would return him to the app.

There are a number of ways to solve this problem.
For Android 5 and up
-go to Settings
-choose security
-Turn Screen Pin on
This will allow you to lock your Android device to a specific app .
One limitation is this will not work on Amazon Fire OS
Other Screen Locks
Apple offers a Screen Lock but I recall reading Apple has a similar function, but not as good.
- I was working with a Amazon Fire which does not implement Screen Lock. The solution I came up with for the problem was to create a frame for the tablets screen. The frame was a bit smaller then the screen and kept the fellow from hitting the tablets buttons.
The frame is held in place by using several pieces of tape to create a hinge at the top, and holding in place by adding velcro at the bottom
BTW When I first met the fellow with dementia he was pretty much spending hios time staring into space. As I have continued to visit he new recognizes me and conversations occur.
Weather this is due to familiarity or his activities with the tablet I do not know. I will ask the family on one of my next visits

I found the solution to this problem, Samsung tablets have 3 physical keys athat are implemented on screen on other android tablets. I took a Samsung tablet and covered the left and right physical keys leaving only the middle key. Doing this created a tablet far more user friendly to people with diasbilities. The iPad has one key and I suspect it too is far friendlier.
